How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves -
“The best book there is on dealing with and training a new dog or pup" ~Gun Dog Magazine~
“…Hang around gun dog people long and you will fine out that advice is free and freely given. Take everything with a grain of salt, including this article. But there is one book, more than any other that has guided my dog training for 30 years: How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves by Joan Bailey. Every time I’ve taken on a new pup, I’ve pulled out a well-worn copy of that book and Read it all over again, chuckling at the 1970’s-era photographs. But Bailey’s words work for me and they have worked for all of my gun dogs over the years. I’ve tried to adhere to the book as much as possible and heed its advice to not be too serious or too rigid in training a young dog…”

How to Have The Best Trained Gun Dog-
For anyone involved in bringing out the best in his/her hunting dog companion, Joan Bailey’s new book How to Have the Best Trained Gun Dog is a great transition from her book, How to Help Gun dogs Train Themselves. Most bookshelves have many books detailing methods to train hunting dogs. None has the clear path to a finished dog defined as well as the combination of these two books.
If you want to succeed at developing your pup to be as good as he/she can be, these two books need to be a part of your journey. If you already have the first book, you will find that Joan Bailey’s new book will fill your needs in your quest for a finished gun dog. There is nothing more pleasurable or satisfying than hunting behind a well-trained gun dog that you have trained yourself from the day pup arrives at your home until he/she is a finished product. Not only will this combination of books help you bring your pup along, but the pup will absolutely love doing it.

Joan Bailey has just written what can easily accurately be described as the long awaited sequel to her first training book. How to Have the Best Trained Gun Dog picks up right where the previous volume left off. It gently and succinctly guides one through all the steps necessary to nurture and train a finished gun dog of any breed to become the kind of dog that you would be proud to pat on the head while your hunting buddies retell the events of the day, as the smell of cooked game fills the room, and your supply of prized single malt scotch dwindles with the firelight.
I have judged many hunting dogs and I can not think of any who would not have been even better had their owners/handlers read the advice that Joan ha snow put into print. Any serious hunter or gun dog owner who just wants an enviable dog should put How to Have the Best Trained Gun Dog on their Christmas list. Actually, I wouldn’t wait for the holidays; I would get it now so the next hunting season can be the best one yet for you and your dog. And if your hunting buddies are envious, let them buy the libation!
